Bharatanatyam
Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest surviving forms of classical dance forms, described in the Natya Shastra. It has evolved greatly over the years and withstood the test of time. What we know as Bharatanatyam today springs from Sadir Natyam or Dasi Attam, the dance of the devadasis performed as a part of temple worship. It went through a significant evolution in the 18th century at the hands of the Thanjavur quartet and later declined during the British colonial rule due to propaganda. Bharatnatyam as we know it today came to be when it was later revived by Rukimini Devi Arundale and E. Krishna Iyer. It is likely that more has changed in the last century than during any other time in the history of Bharatanatyam.
The modern world is a new environment for this ancient art form. Our intention is to create an environment that aspires to once again reach the inner intensity and spirituality essential to this art that took its birth with a sage.
